Active Financial Consulting

Financial goal

Protecting family and income

Protection planning considers what could happen to household finances if illness, injury, disability or death changes a person's ability to earn or contribute.

A clearer first brief

What you may want to bring into view

  • Income and commitments that others rely on
  • Existing cover held personally or through superannuation
  • Questions about policy purpose, cost and terms
  • Coordination with broader financial and estate planning

Start with the outcome

You do not need to arrive with every answer

AFC can help frame the protection questions you want reviewed and introduce you to an appropriately qualified third-party provider.

Begin with the decision, change or concern that prompted you to seek support.

Related questions may point to more than one type of appropriately qualified professional.

Understand the conversation

A useful way to approach this goal

These are orientation points to help you prepare, not a recommendation about what you should do.

01

Start with what needs protecting

The useful starting point is the effect an unexpected event could have on housing, everyday costs, dependants, business obligations and longer-term plans. Existing leave, savings and insurance arrangements can then be considered in that context.

Policies differ in definitions, exclusions, waiting periods, benefit periods, ownership and cost. Product documents and personal advice from an authorised provider are important before applying, replacing or cancelling cover.

02

Connect insurance with the wider plan

Insurance can interact with superannuation, tax, estate planning, business agreements and household cash flow. More than one professional may need to be involved when those areas overlap.

AFC's role is to help identify relevant support and facilitate an introduction. It does not guarantee eligibility, policy acceptance, claim outcomes or product suitability.

  • Gather existing policy summaries before a review
  • Ask for exclusions, definitions and costs to be explained
  • Avoid cancelling existing cover before replacement terms are confirmed

Questions worth considering before you talk

There are no perfect answers. A few notes can simply make the first conversation more focused.

  1. 01

Who relies on your income or unpaid contribution?

  2. 02

What cover do you already hold, including through superannuation?

  3. 03

Have your work, health, debts or family circumstances changed?

  4. 04

Are business or estate-planning arrangements also relevant?
